Onam Saree 2026: What to Wear for Thiruvonam

Onam 2026 begins with Atham on Monday, 17 August and peaks on Thiruvonam, Wednesday, 26 August. If you're planning your saree now, you're doing it right — the good ones sell out weeks before the sadhya is served, and standard delivery across India takes four to seven days.
What makes a saree an "Onam saree"?
The classic Onam drape is the Kerala kasavu: an off-white or cream body with a woven gold zari border, called the kara. The palette is the point — white for purity, gold for prosperity, worn to welcome King Mahabali home. You'll see it on every Malayali woman from the flower carpet (pookalam) in the morning to the feast at noon.
But here's the honest truth: you don't need a Balaramapuram kasavu to belong at an Onam celebration. What you need is the palette — cream, ivory, white, gold and silver, with red or maroon accents if you want drama.
The palette rules
- Body: white, off-white, cream, champagne, silver.
- Border/accent: gold zari is classic; a thin red line along the border is traditional, and red or maroon borders are a much-loved variant, especially for married women.
- Avoid: loud prints and dark bodies — save them for other festive days.

Getting the kasavu look with handloom tissue

Styling for Thiruvonam
- Blouse: contrast is everything against a light body — maroon, emerald, mustard or navy. A gold brocade blouse doubles the festive factor.
- Jewellery: gold or temple jewellery — jhumkas, a layered chain, traditional bangles. This is the one day maximalism is traditional.
- Hair: a neat braid or bun with fresh jasmine (mulla poo) — non-negotiable, and it costs twenty rupees.
- Feet: kolhapuris or simple gold-toned sandals.

When is Onam in 2026? The ten-day festival runs 17–26 August 2026. Thiruvonam, the main day, falls on Wednesday, 26 August 2026.
What is a kasavu saree? Kasavu is the Kerala handloom tradition of an off-white or cream cotton body with a woven gold zari border. The word kasavu refers to the zari itself. Traditional kasavu is woven in centres such as Balaramapuram, Chendamangalam and Kuthampully.
Which fabric is best for an Onam saree? Onam falls in the humid tail of the monsoon, so breathable fabrics win. Mulmul cotton, handloom cotton and tissue cotton stay comfortable through a long sadhya and hold a crisp pleat. Heavy silk tends to be too warm for late August in Kerala.
How much does a good Onam saree cost? Cotton and tissue sarees in the kasavu palette generally run ₹1,500–₹3,000. Certified handloom kasavu from a Kerala weaving centre typically starts around ₹3,000 and climbs with the zari content. Ours are ₹1,697–₹2,397.
Can I wear a colour other than white for Onam? Yes — especially on the days before Thiruvonam. For the main day, most women stay within the cream-gold-silver palette with coloured accents. Yellow is a popular second choice, echoing the pookalam.
Is a tissue saree okay for Onam? Very much so. Handloom tissue in silver, gold or cream reads as a contemporary kasavu — festive shimmer, traditional palette.
