What to Wear for Onam 2026: The Complete Saree Guide

Onam 2026 begins with Atham on Monday, 17 August and peaks on Thiruvonam, Wednesday, 26 August. If you're planning your saree now, you're doing it right — the good ones sell out weeks before the sadhya is served.

What makes a saree an "Onam saree"?

The classic Onam drape is the Kerala kasavu: an off-white or cream body with a woven gold zari border. The palette is the point — white for purity, gold for prosperity, worn to welcome King Mahabali home. You'll see it on every Malayali woman from the flower carpet (pookalam) in the morning to the feast at noon.

But here's the honest truth: you don't need a Balaramapuram kasavu to belong at an Onam celebration. What you need is the palette — cream, ivory, white, gold and silver, with red or maroon accents if you want drama.

The palette rules

  • Body: white, off-white, cream, champagne, silver.
  • Border/accent: gold zari is classic; red or maroon borders are a much-loved variant, especially for married women.
  • Avoid: loud prints and dark bodies — save them for other festive days.

Styling for Thiruvonam

  • Blouse: contrast is everything against a light body — maroon, emerald, mustard or navy. A gold brocade blouse doubles the festive factor.
  • Jewellery: gold or temple jewellery — jhumkas, a layered chain, traditional bangles. This is the one day maximalism is traditional.
  • Hair: a neat braid or bun with fresh jasmine (mulla poo) — non-negotiable, and it costs twenty rupees.
  • Feet: kolhapuris or simple gold-toned sandals.
