Hand block print cotton sarees

Hand block printing stamps colour onto cloth with carved wooden blocks, one impression at a time. Look closely and you can see where each block meets the next: small shifts in alignment and depth of colour that a screen or digital print can't reproduce.

This is a small edit of three pure cotton sarees at ₹1,997, each 5.5 metres with a blouse piece: an indigo dabu, a black-and-white print and an off-white print. Dabu is a mud-resist technique from Rajasthan. A paste of clay, lime and gum is stamped on first, so those areas stay pale when the cloth goes into the indigo vat.

For the most elaborate block print tradition of all, see our Ajrakh sarees, printed in Kutch through around sixteen stages. How the crafts differ is explained in Ajrakh vs Kalamkari vs block print.

Care

Dry clean before the first wash, or hand wash separately in cold water with a pinch of salt. Don't soak for more than two minutes; dry in the shade and iron on medium heat.
