Readymade Blouse Buying Guide: Fabrics, Padded vs Non-Padded & Where to Shop

The readymade blouse market in India has a measurement problem. A "Medium" from one brand fits a 36-inch bust; the same label from another brand doesn't. Fabric names are vague ("fancy fabric" is not a fabric), photos are heavily styled, and by the time the parcel arrives, the wedding is next week. This guide is everything we know about buying a readymade blouse that actually works — fabric, padding, sizing, and where to put your money.

Fabric is the single biggest quality signal

Before cut, before embroidery, before price: what is it made of? A listing that names its fabric — mulmul cotton, handblock cotton, cotton-zari tissue — is telling you the brand knows its supply chain. A listing that says "fancy fabric" or "imported fabric" is hiding something.

For Indian weather, breathable natural fibres win. Cotton and mulmul blouses handle heat and long wear; a well-cared-for mulmul blouse lasts 2–3 years of regular office wear. Synthetics trap heat, pill at the friction points, and rarely survive a second season.

Cotton-zari tissue: the festive alternative to silk

The blouse fabric having a moment — for good reason — is cotton-zari tissue: a base of 100% cotton threads in the warp and weft, with zari woven through for shimmer. You get the festive glow of silk with the breathability of cotton.

Pairing note: a cotton-zari tissue blouse with a handloom tissue saree gives a monochrome shimmer effect that reads far more expensive than it costs.

Padded vs non-padded: choose deliberately

What "padded" means: a built-in lining with thin foam or moulded cups sewn into the bust. It replaces the need for a separate bra — one less strap line, a smoother silhouette under thin fabrics.

• Choose padded for sheer or lightweight sarees (chiffon, tissue, mulmul), backless or deep-cut designs, and long event days. Expect to pay ₹200–₹500 more than non-padded.
• Choose non-padded for daily cotton wear, hot climates, and when you prefer your own fitted bra — it washes easier and dries faster too.
• The hybrid: thin crescent foam inserts (₹50–₹100 at any lingerie store) slipped into a non-padded blouse — but only if the blouse has enough ease at the bust; if it's already snug, inserts create pull lines.

How to read a listing before you buy

• Garment measurements beat body measurements. "Fits bust 36–38 inches" is a guess; "garment chest width: 37 inches" is a fact you can compare against a blouse you own.
• Look for seam allowance. The best readymade blouses leave 1–1.5 inches inside the seams so a local tailor can adjust the fit. Readymade does not have to mean un-alterable.
• Named fabrics only. See above.
• A real return policy. Sellers confident in their sizing accept returns without a fight.

Matching blouse fabric to saree fabric

• Mulmul or cotton saree → cotton or mulmul blouse. Same weight family, same care routine.
• Tissue saree → cotton-zari tissue blouse for monochrome shimmer, or a solid silk-look blouse for contrast.
• Chiffon saree → a lined, traditional-cut blouse; pure chiffon is sheer and shows every ridge underneath.
• Ajrakh or block-print saree → always a solid blouse in a colour pulled from the print — never print on print.

What a fair price looks like

Blouse pricing confuses people because "blouse" means two different products. An unstitched blouse piece (the fabric, often included with a saree) runs a few hundred rupees. A stitched readymade designer blouse — cut, lined, finished — is a garment, and quality ones sit in the ₹1,000–₹2,500 range.
