Choosing a handloom cotton saree

Handloom cotton is woven by hand on a pit loom, one pick at a time, and you can see it in the cloth: the texture shifts slightly along the length and the pleats hold crisply without starch. It is the saree for long, practical days: office, college, travel, errands.

This collection has two families. The Phoolwari line runs to more than 30 shades, from rust orange and mehendi green to indigo, navy and queen pink, at ₹1,697–₹1,897. The contrast handloom sarees pair two colours in body and border (purple with rama green, maroon with grey, magenta with teal) at ₹2,197; they are 5.5 metres long and come with a 0.9 metre blouse piece.

How to pick

  • For office: dark solids such as indigo, navy, maroon and black look sharp all day and repeat easily in a work wardrobe.
  • For day functions: the contrast-border sarees read dressier without any shine.
  • For summer: lighter shades like sky blue, lilac, peach and pista green stay cooler in the sun.

Handloom or powerloom?

A powerloom cotton saree is perfectly even from end to end. A handloom one is not: small variations in texture and tension and a slightly irregular selvedge are how you tell them apart. Handloom costs more for a simple reason. A weaver makes far less cloth in a day than a machine does.

Care

Dry clean before the first wash, or hand wash separately in cold water with a pinch of salt, since deep colours can bleed. Don't soak it for more than two minutes. Dry in the shade and iron on medium heat.

Handloom cotton saree questions

What is a handloom cotton saree?

A handloom cotton saree is woven by hand on a pit or frame loom rather than on a power loom. The hand weave leaves slight variations in texture, breathes well, and holds a crisp pleat, which makes handloom cotton a favourite for office and daily wear.

How can I tell a handloom saree from a powerloom one?

Look closely along the length. Handloom cotton shows small variations in texture and tension and a slightly irregular selvedge, while powerloom cloth is uniform throughout. Handloom also costs more, because a weaver produces far less cloth per day than a machine.

How much does a handloom cotton saree cost?

At Muralika, the Phoolwari handloom cotton sarees cost ₹1,697–₹1,897, and the contrast-border handloom sarees ₹2,197 (5.5 metres plus a 0.9 metre blouse piece). Shipping is free across India and cash on delivery is available.

Is handloom cotton good for office wear?

Yes. It holds a neat pleat all day, breathes in heat, and dark solids like indigo, navy and maroon repeat easily through a work week without looking the same.

Does handloom cotton bleed colour?

Deep shades can release some colour in the first wash. Wash the saree separately in cold water with a pinch of salt, don't soak it for more than two minutes, and dry it in the shade.

Handloom cotton or mulmul: which should I buy?

Buy handloom cotton if you want a crisp, structured, pressed look. Buy mulmul if you want the lightest, softest drape for humid weather; at about 250 grams it is the cooler of the two.
