How to choose a mulmul cotton saree

Mulmul, malmal, mul cotton, mul mul: four spellings, one fabric. It is a fine plain-weave cotton, called muslin in English, spun from finer yarn than everyday cotton. Our mulmul sarees weigh about 250 grams for the full 5.5 metres. You can sit in one through a nine-hour workday or a humid afternoon puja and forget it is there.

Every saree in this collection is 5.5 metres long and 47 inches wide. None of them includes a blouse piece, so plan on a plain cotton blouse you already own or one of our readymade designer blouses.

Where mulmul works, and where it doesn't

Mulmul is at its best for office and daily wear, day weddings, haldi and mehendi, and for anyone draping a saree for the first time, because it almost pleats itself. It is the wrong pick for an evening reception where you want structure and shine. For that, look at handloom tissue or the party wear edit.

Care in two lines

Hand wash it separately in cold water the first time, since hand-dyed and hand-painted colours can release a little dye; after that a gentle cold machine cycle with mild detergent is fine. What is a mulmul cotton saree?

A mulmul cotton saree is woven from mulmul, also called malmal, mul cotton or muslin: a fine, high-count plain-weave cotton. It is one of the lightest cottons made in India. Our mulmul sarees weigh about 250 grams for 5.5 metres, breathe well in heat and humidity, and get softer with every wash.

Are mul cotton, malmal and mulmul the same fabric?

Yes. Mulmul, mul mul, malmal and mal cotton are Indian names for the same fine cotton that English calls muslin. "Mul cotton" is the shorthand used on saree listings. Differences between sellers come from yarn count and weaving quality, not from the name.

What is the difference between mulmul and regular cotton?

Mulmul is spun from much finer yarn than regular cotton, so the cloth is lighter, softer and more breathable. A regular cotton saree holds a crisper pleat and suits a structured look; mulmul drapes closer to the body and feels cooler. Mulmul also softens with each wash.

How much does a mulmul cotton saree cost?

Does mul cotton shrink after washing?

Is mulmul good for office wear?

It is the most practical saree fabric for long days. At about 250 grams it doesn't drag at the shoulder, it breathes in heat, and the pleats stay neat through a workday. For office, pick solids, checks or light embroidery and keep the hand-painted and sequin pieces for functions.

Can I wear a mulmul saree to a wedding?

For day functions such as haldi, mehendi or a daytime ceremony, yes, especially embroidered or sequinned mulmul. For an evening reception most people want more structure and sheen, which is where handloom tissue or Banarasi soft silk works better.
