Handloom tissue sarees: what to know before you buy

A tissue saree has metallic zari woven through it, which gives the cloth its soft, lit-from-within sheen. The word covers two quite different fabrics. Tissue silk is heavy and formal. Tissue cotton, which is what this collection is, keeps the shimmer and drops the weight: crisp, breathable, and wearable through a long festive day.

Every saree here is woven on a handloom, 6.5 metres long including the blouse piece, and 47 inches wide. Because a weaver works the zari by hand, the sheen shifts slightly along the length.

When to wear tissue

Tissue photographs beautifully, which is why it has become a default for pujas, Diwali, engagement functions and evening family events. The cream-and-gold pieces also give a contemporary kasavu look for Onam; see the Onam edit. For an all-day office saree, mulmul or handloom cotton is the more practical choice.

Care

Dry clean only. Zari dislikes steam and high heat, so iron only on the lowest setting with a cotton cloth in between. Store it folded in a cotton bag away from damp, and refold along different lines every few months so the zari doesn't crack at the creases.

What is a tissue saree?

A tissue saree is woven with metallic zari running through the fabric, which gives it a sheer, shimmering finish. It can be woven on a silk or a cotton base. Muralika's tissue sarees are handloom tissue cotton: lighter and more breathable than tissue silk, with the same soft metallic glow.

Is a tissue saree silk or cotton?

Either. "Tissue" describes the zari weave, not the base fibre. Tissue silk is heavier and more formal; tissue cotton is lighter, crisper and easier to wear for hours. Our collection is handloom tissue cotton, plus one linen tissue saree.

How much does a tissue saree cost?

How do I wash a tissue saree?

Dry clean only. Don't use a steam iron; if it needs pressing, iron the zari on the lowest heat with a cotton cloth between the iron and the saree, and store it folded in a cotton bag.

Is a tissue saree good for Onam?

Cream and gold tissue is one of the most popular ways to wear the kasavu palette today. It isn't traditional Kerala kasavu, which is woven in Balaramapuram and Chendamangalam, but it gives the same cream-and-gold look in a light fabric suited to Onam's humid weather. See our Onam edit.
